The movie, “The Hate U Give” is for everyone. Please don’t place a “black” label on it and save it for February. I saw it last night and now I’m afraid that the people who need to see this movie the most, will ignore it and stay home. Particularly, the people who “don’t see color” and “won’t see color” on the big screen. That selective impairment can interfere with the ability to feel empathy. Empathy for people that look different but mourn the same. The hurt runs deep!
Melanin does not block out pain. Grief does not discriminate. The pain in this movie is REAL, not fiction. The names have been changed but the stories are the same.
I wasn’t sure if I wanted to see “The Hate U Give” because I read the book this summer and could not imagine anyone doing it justice. Justice. It’s interesting that I would use that word. It was seen and heard throughout the movie and felt like an unseen main character. The same unseen character that many people of color can’t seem to find in real life.
This is a powerful movie because it shows the aftermath of police brutality. Aftermath. Another interesting word. Why use the word “math”? Is it because we’ll never solve the problem of police brutality? Is it because we’ll never figure out how many people of color have to be subtracted from this earth before the rest of the world will care?
Is it because division is the actual problem and multiplying is the answer?
I often wonder how many people that are lacking melanin are concerned about police brutality. Are they even aware of it? Are they aware that I feel the need to say “people that are lacking melanin” to avoid being called a racist so that they can distract you from this article and my pain? Do they turn away from these terroristic acts and search for something more pleasant to watch? Do they say, “Well they must have done something wrong?” Do they ever think about the life that was in the blood that spilled onto the street? Do they think about the family members that were left behind and were spiritually murdered because a piece of their heart was just ripped away and the remaining pieces will be stabbed with injustice?
Why is it that so many people just don’t seem to care? Is it because they are descendants of the same people that didn’t care during slavery? The same people that saw and did nothing. The same people that ate popcorn while my ancestors were burning on the ground. The same people that used the bible to justify the evil. The same people that were smiling in the postcards while the bodies were hanging from the trees. Are they smiling now while the bodies are hanging horizontally on the pavement? My soul cries out because of the hate YOU give!
Go see the movie and DEFINITELY read the book!
