Lurie Favors:
We do "Thanks-taking", or "Thanks-thieving" as Sophia Chang mentioned, because it allows us to talk about the complexities of black people living on stolen land, celebrating and participating in a holiday that typically honors the colonizer, who throughout the year we vilify, and we speak about quite frankly, openly and honestly. But I have a 6-yr old and a 12-yr old.

Karen: Isn't that a lot for a 6-yr old to comprehend and process?
Lurie: Not so much. Six year olds understand what's fair and what's not. And they understand that if I come into your room and I take your toy, that is wrong. I have essentially colonized your item. I have taken from you and I'm using it for my own purpose without giving you something in return. These are actually very basic concepts.
