The lack of cultural competency in the health care system is killing black people.

In the U.S., Black women die at an alarming rate compared to their white counterparts. The Glam Gap exposes the huge healthcare crisis Black women are faced with.
Lurie: We are not a lost cause. We're just an unorganized effort. And as soon as we organize ourselves and center it on what you already know, (don't go out and learn something brand new and try to build a program around it). What are you passionate about? What do you love doing already? That's what's going to keep you engaged when a lack of volunteerism and a lack of money won't.
Dr. Vikki Johnson: What I've come to learn is that, depression is really the suppression of emotion that really should be expressed.
Karen: If I were a black male student at South Carolina's Benedict College and I asked you, Julian Castro, if I were your son, what advice would you give me the next time, I'm pulled over by police officers. What would you tell me?
Julian: The first thing that I would say, is that it's unfortunate that anybody even has to have that conversation. What I would say is, that's why I'm running for president. To change that, so that we don't have to have that conversation. And I hope people will check out my police reform plan on my website because I was the first candidate and the boldest candidate, to come out with a police reform plan.
Julian: Out of all the candidates running, and folks can look at the record, I have been the most direct. I have been the boldest. I have been the most specific, on how we can reform our police departments. From a national use of force standards, to banning racial profiling, banning stop-and-frisk, demilitarizing our police and getting rid of qualified immunity, so that we can hold officers that engage in excess force, accountable in civil courts. As well as, better recruiting and training, so that our police force actually looks like the people that they have to work with everyday and police.
Karen: I suffer from the same problem. I can sell YOU, I can't sell myself. Even if it's something really good. It's in our DNA because people who are wired to help. They very rarely are going to sell themselves. You just expect people to find you. You just expect people to show up for you, just because you're doing that goodness. But we have to learn how to help each other.
Chris Hogan: You don't increase lifestyles as your income grows, you increase your progress towards your dreams.
Chris: Self-fulfilling Prophecy: If you think you can or you think you can't, either way, you're right.
Chris: There's nothing wrong with cars. I just don't like car payments. So, you get a car that's paid for or you pay off the car. (Why is that such an important thing?) Because it's bondage.
