Dr. Raphael Kellman, "The Microbiome Diet", "The Microbiome Breakthrough"
What is the difference between a prebiotic & a probiotic?
Probiotics are bacteria that are found in our gut.
Prebiotics are nutrients that help the bacteria. You could consider it food for bacteria.

How is a certain bacteria beneficial for the vaginal canal and some for the bladder?
There are different types of bacteria in the vaginal canal and the bladder than there are in the gut. You can use particular probiotics that are for the vaginal canal.

This is a specialized field. I call it Micro-biomedicine. Going to the health food store and randomly picking out a probiotic, may help you but most of the time it doesn't. When people see me, I prescribe the right type of probiotics and prebiotics for their condition. Many people have come to me with autoimmune disorders and have tried probiotics. When you put people on the right probiotics and prebiotics, it can heal and actually reverse autoimmune disorders. It's important to know which ones to take. You need a specialist.
What is a microbiome?
They are trillion of healthy bacteria. They outnumber our own cells 10 to 1.
They play a major role in balancing the immune system. Also, play a significant role in brain function, inflammation, and virtually every type of health issue.

Why can't we get this type of information from our regular doctors?
There are 2 types of medicine. One path focuses on drugs (and they can be necessary in an emergency situation) but what they don't focus on are the causes that lie beneath all of this.
The field that I'm in, really focuses on those deeper causes that you don't see on the surface. They lie deep and there are many layers. When you heal, address, and fix these antecedents (causes), you begin to help heal the problem.

Autoimmune diseases, glutens, and food allergies:
When you have an autoimmune disease, you should be on a gluten-free diet.
Glutens are certain proteins found in various grains, like wheat, rye, spelt, and some oats.
They can create a lot of inflammation and that can then lead to the gut wall breaking down when the immune system is overactive and that also in turn affects the microbiome and the bacteria.
What is not as well known, is that there are many types of food allergens that people have and you really need to get tested for food allergies. I have seen some people that were eating gluten-fee oats and were not getting better. It was because they had an allergy to oats. Some people have allergies to eggs and didn't know it. Some have allergies to ginger, soy, olives, and coconut. You can do an IGE or IGG allergy testing. There not all good. You have to get the right one. In addition to that, you can do a food elimination diet.
The interesting thing is, once you begin to heal the gut and the microbiome, you won't be allergic to those foods anymore.

What should we look for when starting probiotics and prebiotics for the first time?
It will depend on your history and specific health issues. But you can start with a very general probiotic that has diversity. Don't just focus on the number. You want different types of probiotics, one that has 8 or 10. Also, make sure that it tells you the specific strain, where there's a number. It may say, acidophilus or bifidobacterium. Then you should see a number, or maybe an x, y, a, or b (like xy473). Then you will know that they are based on research that has shown to be beneficial.

How do we find a doctor near us like Dr. Kellman that practices holistic medicine?
You could look up functional medicine. It's kind of a keyword, not just holistic medicine. Functional medicine means to improve function. It's preferable to find one that is a M.D.

Information for caller that had several issues:
All autoimmune disorders have a common etiology and that is microbiome issues. The microbiome is unhealthy. You need to heal the microbiome and the gut wall. Be careful with the right type of foods and do an elimination diet. Read my book. People really see a significant reversal and benefit from following the whole microbiome medicine approach.

What's on the Microbiome Diet?
Prebiotic superfoods like Jicama. Jicama is incredible.
If you eat Jicama, radishes, asparagus, fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi, you will notice that you're not going to crave foods that you were craving before.

What's bad for the microbiome?
Excessive sugar, refined foods, packaged and processed foods. Anything that doesn't look like it's connected to nature is probably not a good food.

Information for caller that has been on the same drug for years:
It could potentially hurt the microbiome. The microbiome has a wide range of effects. It's the conductor of our health. If you hurt the conductor, the symphony is not going to sound good. It could lead to so many diseases.
Also, some people need hydrochloric acid and some drugs block acid production.
The reason why a lot of people have gastroparesis (reflux), is because they're deficient in hydrochloric acid. Remember if you cut out all acids, the microbiome is not going to be healthy. We need acid production.

Hypertension:
Do the microbiome diet. Remember, it not just about taking medications but eventually, if you heal deeper, the causes of hypertension, someday you might be able to get off of the blood pressure medication.

What is the root cause of hypertension?
Chemicals and inflammation.
Where is the inflammation coming from? The Microbiome.
An unhealthy microbiome and an unhealthy immune system equals inflammation. It's called oxidative stress. Free radicals and unstable compounds damage the membranes of the vessels and then you get hypertension as a reaction. When someone has hypertension, it's not because they are lacking in blood pressure medicine. It's because there's an underlying pathology and that's frequently inflammation, free radicals, etc.
