Assimilation is exhausting and it leaves no time for innovation and creativity. And those are the two things that our companies need from us now more than ever. And so, you have to figure out what is appropriate for you and your work culture, or find a new work culture. Lurie Favors:
We do "Thanks-taking", or "Thanks-thieving" as Sophia Chang mentioned, because it allows us to talk about the complexities of black people living on stolen land, celebrating and participating in a holiday that typically honors the colonizer, who throughout the year we vilify, and we speak about quite frankly, openly and honestly. But I have a 6-yr old and a 12-yr old. If you're in that valley...where you are right now, doesn't have to be where you end up unless you stop. You've got an opportunity to learn your way out of this, and grow your way out of this but, it's going to take some time. You didn't get to where you are overnight, so don't expect to fix it overnight. That unrealistic expectation can frustrate you.
An audio recording of Lena Waithe was played:
"I wanted to humanize us. There's a study that says, if you're ever being held up at gunpoint, you should share personal things about your life. You should say, you have a child, you should say you have parents waiting for you at home, you should talk about what you survived. Because, then the gunman sympathizes with you. It's harder for them to kill you. So, for me, with my work, I figured, maybe if I could humanize black people enough, they'll stop killing us. |
