WHAT IS SPEED RACEING?
A FUN EVENT THAT PROMOTES HARMONY IN THE COMMUNITY.
The concept of "Speed Raceing" was born the week after the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, in 2016, out of frustration and hopelessness. It is an effort to promote Positivity and Unity. It is an effort to Restore Hope.
"Speed Raceing" is similiar to "Speed Dating" but is NOT a dating service. It is a social...(what's a good word), "expedition". Love it! Yes, Speed Raceing is a "social expedition". Merriam-Webster's definition of an expedition is "a journey especially by a group of people for a specific purpose (such as to explore a distant place or to do research)". At "Speed Raceing", a group of people take a journey (travel around the room), with the specific purpose of relating to people that are from a different race. "How are we alike? What do we have in common?" The expedition consists of 5-minute "trips". Each trip consists of 2 people asking a series of questions with the goal of finding each others similarities. What is our common ground?

I went to a Speed Raceing event at the Severna Park library this afternoon. It was great! It was so much fun! I mean, we had some serious times, but we also played games (musical chairs! charades!) Using the speed dating concept to have short conversations with strangers (no politics!) is brilliant. This is an excellent opportunity to begin to get to know people who may be from different racial and cultural backgrounds than you. You know we need to talk! - Debi Jasen
On Sunday James and I participated in an activity called Speed Raceing. It is the brilliant concept of my lovely friend Skye Bailey. She wanted to find a way to facilitate understanding, camaraderie, dialogue and friendship through discussion, games and friendly interactions in a comfortable and safe setting. Although thus far the Speed Raceing events have been very successful and enjoyed some diverse participation, including local police officers, she is hoping to reach a wider audience and would love more community involvement. Please visit her Facebook page and her website and consider attending the next event. It really is a fun and educational experience for young and old and a wonderful way to help Skye affect positive change regarding race relations. - Sarah Blaser
